Matt Nathanson - Dallas 2011

Friday, September 23, 2011
Gexa Energy Pavilion, Dallas, Texas
Maroon 5 & Train with Special Guest Matt Nathanson

The reason I went...

Love, LOVE, LOVE Matt Nathanson!!!

I knew that since Matt was the opening act,
he'd probably only be performing for half an hour.
But, that's better than nothing....right?
[That would be an "Ohhhh....yeeeahhh!!!"]

Set List
Mercy
Dog Days Are Over [intro]
Pretty the World
Modern Love
Queen of [K]nots [with Tainted Love/Personal Jesus]
Laid
Room at the End of the World [with Losing My Religion]
Come On Get Higher
Faster

Matt sounded amazing and I loved the little 'bonus bits'
he included in a couple of songs.

Sadly, I had a ticket for lawn seating,
and for some crazy reason,
they didn't film Matt's performance
to be projected onto the big screens,
so this is what Matt looked like to me.

So I was BEYOND excited when Matt announced that he would
be out after the show for a meet & greet.

At first I thought [as did several others],
that he meant after his performance...
but it was after the entire show.

Waiting in line to meet Matt...which would explain the big smile! :)

I started getting a bit anxious, because the line was moving
slower than I thought it would. My sister was on her way
to pick me up and I didn't want her waiting too long all by
herself. [Because the Gexa Energy Pavilion is located in
a not-so-great part of town, if you know what I mean.]

As I got closer to the front of the line, I decided to test
my camera before it was my turn, because it doesn't
always work that great in the dark, so I used Matt as my test subject.

When it was finally my turn to 'meet and greet' with Matt,
I walked over to him and said, "Hi Matt!"
He greeted me with a smile and said "Hi! How are you doing?"
I told him how I just moved here from the Bay Area
and the show made me homesick!

Matt said, "This is just like San Francisco!"
We looked at each other for a few seconds and then laughed.
"No, it most definitely is not!" I said.

I told him how bummed I was that they didn't have
the screens working for his performance,
so he looked like just a blur to me.
"Yeah, I know...sorry!" he replied.

He asked me if I had something for him to sign.
I told him that I didn't bring a CD because it would be
like Sophie's Choice trying to decide which one,
so instead I brought this.... pulling out a photograph of us
when I met him on Halloween 2008.

He looked at it and said, "Aww...jeez!"

I told him that the shirt I was wearing is now
my 'lucky shirt' because I was also wearing it when
I met Hugh Jackman and John and Roger Taylor
of Duran Duran. Matt replied with "Right on!"
and gave me a high five!
He told me how he had recently sat next to John Taylor
while having breakfast in LA.
"Yeah, I know." I responded. [He had tweeted about it.]

Then we started having a discussion about John Taylor!
Matt said that John looks older than he thought, comparing
him to an English professor. I agreed that John looked older,
but still looks really good for his age!
[And that I've never had any teachers or professors
that looked anything like him!]

It was all just a bit surreal talking with one of my favorite musicians
about another favorite musician, whose pictures I had posted
all over my walls during my teenage years!
Definitely not one of your everyday run-of-the-mill conversations.

Then we posed for a picture.

"Thanks for coming!" - Matt
"It was nice seeing you again!" -Me

[As I was leaving, I grabbed my camera and hit the wrong button
and got a picture of Matt's pants and shoes.
Which for some reason I found amusing,
which is why I kept it rather than deleting it.]

I found my little sister and thanked her profusely for waiting
a little longer for me so I could have this wonderful experience.

Halloween with Matt Nathanson

On Halloween 2008, I experienced Trick or Treat in an unusual way.

I went to San Francisco to attend a free show
that a local radio station [Alice 97.3] was putting on.
The first 100 people there also got a free CD and if you know me,
I can't say no to free, so I made sure to get there early.
The line was longer than I expected when I arrived,
but I still scored a free CD.

As I was walking across the street to get to the club, Ruby Skye,
I noticed someone else nearby crossing the street.
I looked again and thought, "Is it?"

When I entered the club, I noticed it was rather dark and
that there were steps to walk down.
I was deliberately looking down at the ground because of that,
but it didn't make a difference.
I thought I was on the last step, but I wasn't and...thud...down I went!

Luckily for me, there was only one witness to my fall.
[Because it wasn't pretty!]
The guy came over to see if I was okay.
I told him my right foot hurt, but I was okay.
He mentioned that he heard a crack and was afraid it was a bone.
It was just my free CD, which had stabbed into my left hand.
He kindly offered to help me up,
but I told him I wanted to sit for another moment.
[That was the trick part of my Halloween.]

Unfortunately, all the seating areas were marked as 'reserved'
so I ended up leaning against the bar for support
and ended up having a 6+ foot tall guy standing in front of me!

Things got better once the show began and Matt Nathanson took the stage.
This was my first time seeing him and I only knew a handful of his songs.
He was quite amusing. [And a bit naughty, too!]

He performed five songs and did a quick Q&A.
One of the songs he performed was called 'Little Victories'.
That one sealed the deal for me. I was now officially a Matt Nathanson fan!

So when it was announced that Matt would be signing autographs
and taking pictures after the show, I got in line!

As I waited for it to be my turn to meet Matt,
a thought came to my mind, and I knew just what I had to say to him....
"I literally fell for you!"
I then briefly explained what happened to me.
He confided in me that he almost fell off the stage because it was so dark!
[Which made me feel better that I wasn't the only one having that problem.]

As we were talking the photographer was taking pictures of us.
Matt said to the photographer, "We were talking during those,
could you take some more without us talking?"
Wasn't that so sweet?

I asked Matt if he could do a little favor for me
and he was more than happy to oblige.
So I recorded a special "shout out" message.
[Which didn't look quite this dark when I was recording it.]

I thanked him and picked up my bag to leave,
when he said, "So I'll see you later."
And he came over to me and gave me a big hug!
Awww!!! That was definitely my Halloween treat!

So in a nutshell...
Round Trip BART ticket: $10.00
Alice 97.3 CD: Free
Ace Bandage for hurt foot: $3.99
Meeting Matt Nathanson: PRICELESS!!!

[Oh, and yes, in case you were wondering,
it was Matt who was crossing the street next to me.]

Welcome

Welcome to Musical Nonsense!

This blog will be all about...surprise, surprise....music!

I'll be sharing concert reviews, musical encounters,
favorite songs and albums from the past, present and future.

Special thanks to my friend Maggie, for the blog name.
Yeah, OK, I 'stole' it from her.
It was her AIM name, once upon a time.
I thought it would be a cool name for this blog,
and it wasn't used yet, so voila!
Musical Nonsense it is!

So since I got my inspiration from her, I should at least share
the story of how we became friends in the first place.
Through music, of course!

I lived on the west coast, she lived on the east coast.
I was twenty-something, she was in her teens.
But in spite of all these differences, we became friends,
because of our love for a certain band.
[Which I'm sure I'll write about...eventually!]
A good majority of the stories and reviews I'll be sharing
more than likely wouldn't have happened if we hadn't 'met'.

Hope you'll enjoy my blog and leave a comment or two!
